around the world

Have finally managed to get my computer going now I've arrived in Paris. It is good to see people are still going to see Look Both Ways back in Australia. It was a huge thrill to win the prize at Toronto, we had already left and were in Madrid on our way to San Sebastian. Bridget and I, and Maryjeanne, my sister and the post production supervisor, drank a glass of champagne in a hotel lobby surrounded by a spanish wedding party, a hundred people who arrived shortly after us. They were dressed up, but not as much as the actual bullfighters who also came in, still dressed in full gear, from their day in the ring. So it was a gala evening for us, even though we had left Toronto.
San Sebastian has to be one of the best places in the world, or is that just my thing with beaches and food? And campari with fresh orange juice whilst watching the promenade at dusk... aaahhh. So that offset my hopelessness at media presentations, and dealing with translators and complete idiocy with languages other than english. Next stop Pusan.

Hi Sarah and William
Finally went and saw your movie last night and loved it. Having recently moved back to Sydney from Adelaide, it was really interesting to see Semaphore and the surrounding environs on the big screen. Also loved the raw emotions and the open responses of all the characters..it was all very real. Thanks you also for giving us all the opportunity to write to you in this way, and keep in touch with your travels. Good luck and bless you. Kate

I came out of the cinema with my heart breaking but I couldn't cry because I was left with such hope. In spite of all the terrible things that can happen to people, relationships are the enduring stuff of life. I loved the train driver and his son, I loved that Merryl's looming 'disaster' was skinned knees and a soaking( even though for a split second I was stunned and gasped in horror- it was totally unexpected), I loved that sometimes words are superfluous and that Nick has a future. I love that life is celebrated and I have learned to look both ways: the past and the future, grief and hope, loss and love, the profound and the simple. There is so much to savour in this film. I am going to see it again and again. It is a real treasure to find a film where the narrative is so carefully crafted through every element of the film. 'Congratulations' doesn't seem right, so 'thank you' to all involved (and yes, I did stay reading the credits right to the very end, so I know who you are!)

I wish I could put into words how much your movie moved me. I saw it today and the knot in my stomach of emotions is still there. I have thought that you were the luckiest woman in the world for quite a few years because you husband is so breathtakingly handsome and talented, but I can honestly say that after seeing this movie, I think that you are a master film maker with an amazing gift. Please continue to give us films. I hope Look Both Ways will be on DVD in time for christmas, so I can share your masterpiece with my loved ones. thank you.

Hi
New to blogging but just wanted to congratulate you all on a fantastic movie. Saw LBW in Melb. last week and its poignancy has stayed with me ever since. There's a bunch of midwives in Ballarat awaiting its arrival after listening to me raving on!
Is there any chance of obtaining a print of Meryl's painting of greenish sea with huge crest rising up to a stormy cloud (the painting every one kept telling her was great)? My contact details are knoxub@gmail.com.
Thanks, Kate

Sarah,
I saw your movie on the weekend and just wanted to say I think you are incredibly clever. Did you cast your husband in the movie because he is a very, very good actor or because he was spending too much time around the house?

i just saw look both ways tonight at the chicago international film fest, and the only disappointment i had with it was that no one was there for a talkback after the screening. it was a wonderful film and i was taken by the montages for nick and the animations for meryl. pity there weren't any towards the end of the film. why is this? and why not a trip to chicago?

Sarah Watt & Maryjeanne,
How fabulous to see you doing this with your artistic talent and to learn that the now famous (yet understated)Sarah Watt is in fact the Sarah Watt I knew and loved growing up at the pool! Took me ages to find a photo of you to confirm this!! Saw MJ & Fiona in Melb 2 years ago waving off Eileen and that was fabulous but too short a moment. Misplaced MJ's email address somewhere between then and UK and back to Oz!!
I havent seen the movie yet but I get goosebumps everytime I hear about it and look forward to savouring it soon.
All good wishes & fabulous travels, Blobb

I hope someone still looks at this site - and I wish I'd got around to seeing this film sooner. At last, a film that I loved as much as 'Terms of Endearment', which I have used as my personal gold standard for years - a film that has me laughing & crying with real emotion, every time I see it. LBW was absolutely beautiful, a real masterpiece. I loved it. Congratulations to all involved. It was a very brave film, and it moved me beyond words.

Loved the film.
One of my favourite Aussie films of all time and definitely the best film I have seen this year.
I have been telling overseas friends about it and wonder whether it is going to be released overseas and if so when?
Congratulations on all the awards and nominations to date.

Loved the film, found it refreshingly real; simultaneously heartwrenching and uplifting. Saw it three times during brief visit to Australia. But would love for friends & family in the US & Europe to see it; any estimate re when it may make it to theaters, or DVD, in those areas?
Thanks,
Heidi

I was in Pusan for its International Film Festival and was very excited to see LBW on the list! Unfortunately, it was sold out, so I couldn't see it, but I had already seen it in Adelaide when it came out, so no dramas!
I do have plans to buy it on DVD so that I can subject all my friends in Busan to the goodness that is this film, especially as I know many of the areas it was filmed in.

Awesome film; congratulations!!

Hi Sara and William, Congratulations on all yours successes. I've been watching from a distance up here in Sunny north Qld. the unfolding of your continous fame. After watching Australian Story Sara I was really sad to hear about your illness, I think I cried, but refrained from calling you immediately because I thought you would have been inundated with calls from well wishing friends. I missed your film Look both ways at the cinema because I was probably working out at the mines, however I finally got around to getting the dvd out and watched it at least twice and also watched and listened to all the commentary. The film was so you, oh and yeh William was pretty good too.
I'm not sure if you'll ever get to read this because Iam so technically incompetent on internet and computers but here's hoping. Please email me at jdthomson@iprimus.com.au so I can write to you on a more personal level. Love you both heaps, hope you haven't forgotten who I am, just remember where you met and it might come back to you, especially using the white valiant for my wedding car.
Lots of love
